Llangollen WW Rafting (20 May 2026)

On Wednesday May 20th there's the chance to have a go at White Water Raft Race Skills on the River Dee. We will either stay at the Mile End Mill site or do a run down from Horsehoe Falls to Mile End Mill depending on water levels.

Once people have booked on I'll set up a WhatApp Group to let those booked on know exactly where to meet. If we do end up parking at Mile End Mill you will need to register your car and pay the site fee for that.

We'll aim to meet at 6pm to get the raft pumped and get ready & if needed do a shuttle.

We will use a Raft loaned from British Rafting with the aim of encouraging participation in the British Raft Race Series events. See link below:

https://paddleuk.org.uk/white-water-rafting

Please note that spaces on the raft are limited to 4 so please book on early to avoid disappointment.

This opportunity can only take place if the river Dee is 0.65 or below on the Corwen Gauge and therefore may have to be postponed at short notice if the river rises above this.

Due to the Club's Raft Remit scope in order to book on you must have had either:

Experience in a canoe / Kayak on grade 2 WW

Previous experience of being guided as a crew member on a raft on grade 2-3 WW

Experience of rafting on flat water or Mile End Mill or similar with Shrewsbury CC

Experience of raft racing or raft race training.

Must be fit enough to help carry the raft between 4-5 people.

Drysuits or dry trousers good thick cag and thermal layers are essential due to the expected cold water. Buoyancy Aids and Helmets are also required.

We are able to borrow paddles for rafting from the club.

We aim not to flip the raft over but there is always a possibility of that happening! Please bring plenty of warm clothes to get changed into afterwards.

During this session you will begin to develop the skills needed for the Raft Race Personal Performance Award - see link for further details: https://paddlesuptraining.com/courses/river-raft-racing-award

Please chat to Anita if any questions either via email:

shepaddles@shrewsburycanoeclub.org

or phone 07796108207

Looking forward to Rafting the Rapids with you!

Symonds yat Park and Play White Water Kayaking (30 May 2026)

Matt is running a moving water park and play trip to Symonds Yat on the 30th May.

Meeting at the first carpark on the right next to the Wyedean canoe hire place (look for boats adorning the building), at 9am. (spaces are limited so the earlier the better)

car park is before the road narrows into the village. The access to the river is tonnes better than the second carpark (sadly PUK has lost the access rights via the carpark closer) w3w ///brave.lengthen.twists

Symonds yat is short grade 2 park and play venue where the river is squeezed into a small channel formed by an island in the gorge. There are some nice jets and waves to play on and some eddies to catch.

This would suit anyone starting out on white water, or someone with little experience. You just need strong forward paddling, knowledge of moving water and have done a controlled capsize before. It is a great place to develop skills and just have a lovely day in a lovely place.

Required kit; WW boat, air bags, paddle, spray deck, helmet and buoyancy aid, food/drink, cag and wetsuit as a minimum, drysuits are preferred but not compulsory. Club kit available to hire, just get in touch.

On offer is the club lead option but will be limiting numbers unless other leaders are available and a peer group.
WW Alps Club Trip 2026 (13 Jun 2026)

The Alps Trip 2026 is now available to book onto. As a Club Trip with confirmed 5 leaders attending, places are limited to 15 non-Leader paddlers, so places are very limited. Please add yourself to the waiting list if the event is full in case anyone drops out.

The Paddling

We are anticipating a week of boating on alpine G2/3 (equivalent of UK G3 with occasional G4) and G4/G4+, depending on river levels, boat choice and personal paddling experience. Rivers such as the Durance, Severaisse, Gyronde, Ubaye and others are on the wish list and offer a variety of river choice each day.

As a benchmark anyone attending this trip should be able to paddle the Upper Tryweryn, and be comfortable running top to bottom and making the larger eddies. Anyone wishing to paddle the G4 options should be able to competently navigate the more complicated sections, make the smaller eddies, achieve crosses of the faster flowing sections (such as ‘Graveyard) - hopefully this provides a feel for the level you need to be at to get the most from the trip.

We hope to paddle Sun 14th June to Fri 19th June, although we’d anticipate not everyone paddling everyday in a Club Paddle environment.

It is planned to offer a G4 trip on most days, with varying availability depending on the river and the number of runs that can be achieved. These will be complemented by an alpine G2/3 trip for those wanting that style of paddle, or not able to paddle the G4 option on any given day. Each evening the leaders will set out the options for the following day to allow decisions to be made and plans put in place.

The nature of alpine paddling is such that not all rivers suit all paddlers or their choice of craft. As a Club Trip the leaders are responsible for the safety of the group pn the water, and will make any final call on the suitability for any trip for those wanting to go on it during the prior evening. The leaders will do all we can to accommodate everyone, but please appreciate this may not always be possible. Please also bear in mind that the leaders are volunteers, also on holiday - we aren't employed tour guides!

Expect some early starts through the week as we take advantage of paddling a variety of rivers around region.

For clarity, this trip is being put on and led only by Club leaders.

Pre-trip Paddle Weekend

We are asking all paddlers to attend at least one day on the Treweryn with the leaders prior to the trip. This is so that we can gauge your paddling experience, choice of craft etc such that we can plan the trips accordingly. This is a pre-requisite for anyone wishing to paddle any of the G4 options being put on. Any issues with making one of the date options please let us know asap so we can come up with a suitable plan.

The dates options for this will likely be May, dates to follow in the next week or so.

Activities off the Water

Being in the most stunning part of the French alps, there is plenty to do if you fancy a day or two off the water, with via Ferrata being a clear choice (Dangling on a wire above Chateax Q is awesome!) but also hiking and cycling options. Google is your friend for inspiration!

Travel

It is expected that everyone make travel arrangements and book their own tickets etc. We would anticipate everyone being at the campsite near Briancon by 4pm on Sat 13th June in time to make camp / settle in prior to the first paddle briefing. Those arriving early enough might also get a float on the Rabioux Wave adjacent to the camp site.

Departing is expected to be on Sat 20th June to make your way home / onward travels.

Please seek to car share as best you can - as members join the group of paddlers you’ll be added to the obligatory WhatsApp group to help with these arrangements.

Accommodation

Accommodation will be at the New Rabioux campsite, https://camping-new-rabioux.fr/en/home/. They have a range of camping, pre-pitched tent and cabin options, currently with availability for them all. You are expected to book and pay for your own camping directly with the campsite to secure your accommodation. It is a lovely campsite on the banks of the Durance river (day 1 paddle!), and next to the Rabioux Wave for those so inclined.

Catering

The campsite has a small cafe, there are some eateries in the local village, and plenty of supermarkets nearby for self catering. I’m sure we will eat out together on one or two nights as well. Assume you are looking after yourself, eating early, then gathering together for the evenings sat out under the stars. Perhaps a BBQ or two on the banks of the Durance as well.

Insurance

Please ensure you take out suitable insurance for the purposes of the trip generally, and also for paddling at the river grades you hope to paddle at on the trip. The Club accepts no responsibility for any necessary trip changes or location changes due to weather and river levels, etc.

What to Bring

Please bring all the necessary paddling equipment. Keep an eye on the weather, but generally shorts, rash vest and cag will be sufficient. If it looks chilly, then a dry suit will leave you happier. Boat choice is important - large volume creek boats are likely to be a requirement for a number of the G4 days, although the play spots of L'Argentierre lend themselves to a half slice - bring a quiver if you wish!

Other than that, BA, helmet, paddle, deck, rescue equipment and suitable footwear are a must. Outdoor kit for walking, and a via Ferrata kit is also handy.

Hopefully this sets out the trip and provides most of the necessary information at the moment. Any questions please get in touch.

Scotland canoe white water trip (26 Jun 2026)

So its time once again to plan that lovely get away this time in Scotland: dates 26 June to 5th July ( including journey up and back). The River Spey is one of Britain's most iconic white water rivers following the whisky trail through the Highlands taking in Loch Insch, Aviemore, Granton and fun rapids along the journey such as the Washing Machine, Knockandoo and plenty of places to learn skills. So would be rude not to paddle it in a canoe as its the most iconic canoe WW trip in Britain. Also plan to paddle some of the Findhorn ( a large river with 4 whitewater runs from the grade 2 to up to grade 4 depending on whos coming ) first come first served as at present I am the only leader and coach on this trip and yes its traditional canoes only. Plans for the trip will be agreed depending on who wants to go but be assured the traditional grade 1-2(3) Spey will be paddled possibly from beginning to the bay. Plan is for us to stay at hotels or air BNB accommodation, shared driving for shuttles and to have a chill out adventure. what's not to enjoy

any questions give me a email Davidjcoan@hotmail.com

Time is 'on the water' - please arrive 15 minutes prior to get kit sorted. Late arrivals may not get the opportunity to paddle.

Suitable for adults and for juniors (generally 8 to 10 years old plus) to join in a 'give it a go' session in a fun and safe environment. Participants may be grouped depending on number of participants and number of coaches, generally into age and/or experience specific groups (e.g. adults / older teenagers / juniors).

Coaches and leaders on hand to provide handy hints and tips while supervising the session. Will usually build to a capsize and get out practice, while either having a gentle tour up the river or a wet game session at Frankwell.

A really fun event to come and give Paddle Sport a go.

Feel free to hang around with us at the end of the session for a bit of a social, have a cuppa or a bring a beer with you!

Two of these sessions are free before we ask you to sign up as a member.

If required a craft, paddle, spray deck, helmet and buoyancy aid can be provided by the Club for £10.00 charge, payable at booking. No refunds or transfers of booking payments are available for cancellations made on the day of the event.

Please bring warm, non-cotton clothes or a dry suit / wet suit for paddling in, footwear for paddling in (essential), water proof jacket and warm change of clothes.

No need to book if you have your own craft and you don’t require leading or coaching - just rock up and join in a fun club night.
