The 4 Ds are having another placid paddle down the very beautiful and scenic Wye . This trip is going through the windy beautiful farmland. The trip is a mere 19.7km ( the guidebook quote) so will be a full day trip.

Anyone who can paddle in a straight line who has been on some Monday nights and or other nights and any craft ( pause maybe a tad far for the coracle  ). This is in essence a gentle placid paddle with one area that may have  a very small rapid ( which we can walk down ) or a pile of rocks to wander around depending on water levels.

Historically of note Monnington falls was the main obstacle to river trade, that was originally a 8 foot stone weir which was removed and demolished to allow barges to go up and down river. ( made by Owain Glyndwr back in the day). Other excitement is you can see Offas dyke ( just) and the Bridge Sollar's a Scandinavian bridge one of only a few built in this country. Plus this area is known for its natural wild life, think herons, kingfishers, fish and other excitement like possible otters, i know calm down.

You will need :

  • As one  grade two  section a helmet ( BC rules) f you don't want to paddle, line or play on this you can easily portage. (see grade definitions below or ask a D if unsure )
  • A craft , BA plus all the tack that goes with the craft i.e leash, spray deck or pump, painters etc.
  • a personal first aid kit,
  • breakfast , lunch snacks, second lunch ( ok food and drink), nb enough drink for the day think heat and at least 1.5 litres of fluid.
  • A sense of humour and sun tan lotion, Hat  for sun if you have a bald spot, and if you feel the need something to sit on for all the lunch stops.
  • spare clothing are always a good plan think towel.

Those that want there are a number of camp sites of which we are setting of from one so you can also if you would like camp the night before. those who want to camp let me know if keen as its a bit of a faff to organise otherwise.

please any questions to davidjcoan@hotmail.com.

n.b  Karen Darby is coming as a 4th D

Grade 1 means the water is moving, without rocks or other hazards to avoid, and without technical difficulties. Basically it means paddling it should be within most people's abilities. It's the 'easiest' river you can paddle and great for practicing on moving water if you've never paddled on it before.

Grade 2 rivers are the next step up from Grade 1. They can include waves and small stoppers which should be easy to navigate. They can also include eddies where you can catch your breath.
