COME AND JOIN US ON THE WATER

There is club activity on the water most weekend, and on Monday and Wednesday evenings during the summer

Summer Evening Sessions

Autumn & Winter Pool Sessions

Racing Sessions

WEEKEND PADDLES AND OTHER TRIPS

Most weekends there will be Members paddling somewhere, on the sea or surf or on white water or inland touring rivers.  Weekends away are likely to include the Dart, Pembrokeshire and the Tyne.

Longer trips each year may include Scotland, Ireland and the Greek islands for wild camping/sea kayaking, the Alps for white water.

Please join us as a member to take advantage of these trips. All trips are advertised through our website and shared by email when you become a member.

CLUB TRIPS/ACTIVITIES and PEER TRIPS/ACTIVITIES

Club trips/activities are offered by, or on behalf of, the committee. They will offer coaching and/or leadership by a club approved coach or paddle leader working within his or her approved remit.

Peer trips/activities are offered by members and are informal, with each individual responsible for themselves or their younger paddlers. The Club is not responsible for Peer activities.

PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE

Club members have public liability insurance whilst taking part in Club Trips/Activities.  Your household insurance may give public liability cover on Peer Trips/Activities.

If you do not have relevant cover under a household policy, probably the cheapest way to get this is to join British Canoeing as an “On the water member” as well as being a member of the Club

DUTY OF CARE AND ASSUMED RISK

On Club Activities Members and prospective members will be owed a duty of care by the Coach/Leader which will include advice and assistance with choice of kit if requested.  But paddle sport is always an assumed risk activity and the older/more experienced you are the more you must take responsibility for your own safety.

North Wales sea trip: Mull preparation weekend

NOTE: booking as a led paddler will initially be available to only those who are already booked or on the waiting list as led paddlers on the September 2022 Mull trip. If any places remain on 16 May, they will be opened to the whole club. Peer paddler booking is open to anyone from now.

Dave Southern will be leading a preparation and skills weekend for our planned September 2022 Mull sea kayak trip, in North Wales, on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May. Exact location will be based on weather and sea state closer to the time.

The trip will be an opportunity to learn and / or practice essential skills for the Mull trip. The trip will include skills sessions mixed with journeys. We hope to include a wild camp on Saturday night and paddle with full boats, depending on the weather.

Dave is the club safety officer, and we want all paddlers on the Mull trip to have paddled with Dave before September. It is therefore expected that everyone going on the Mull trip will paddle with Dave at some point over the Summer - this weekend will be a good opportunity to do so, and we would like as many Mull paddlers as possible to come on this trip.

The trip will include both a led group and an experienced peer paddler group.

Cost: There is no cost, though there might be parking charges and depending on whether we wild camp, camping charges. People will need to organise their own food.

Location: North Wales, exact location to be decided week of the trip.

Led paddlers: Dave will lead 6 paddlers. You need to be able to paddle a sea kayak and have a confident capsize.

Peer paddlers: need to be able to make judgements as to the suitability of yourself, your kit and your skills in the prevailing conditions, and take responsibility for yourself and your fellow peer paddlers.

Trainee leaders: if you are a trainee leader, and would like to help Dave, for log book experience, please choose the "Trainee leader" option when registering.

Registration: The trip is only open to registered members of the club. There will be unlimited peer paddler places. There will be 6 led paddler places. We will run a waiting list for led paddlers - please put yourself on it if the trip fills up, in case of cancellations etc

Club boats: Club sea kayaks are available for hire. If you wish to use one, please arrange for and pay for this separately.

    Kit list

The weekend is an opportunity for you to test out what you have and to find out what you might need to buy before the Mull trip in September. As well as paddling kit, you will need camping kit suitable for overnight kayak trips.

Paddling basics - everyone is expected to have these:

    • Suitable paddling clothes
    • Suitable paddling footwear
    • Buoyancy aid
    • Whistle (e.g. attached to BA)
    • Spray deck
    • Paddles
    • Helmet
    • Sunhat and sunglasses
    • Suncream
    • Warm hat
    • Phone in a submersible waterproof phone pouch
    • Snack bars accessible while paddling (eg in BA)
    • Water accessible while paddling
    • Sponge - not essential, but good for your comfort

Emergency kit - all peer paddlers are expected to carry these items. Led paddlers, please do bring if you have them, but do not buy especially - we will discuss kit:

    • Spare split paddles
    • Paddle float
    • Pump
    • Tow line
    • Contact tow
    • Knife
    • Sling and karabiners
    • First aid kit
    • Survival bag
    • Repair kit
    • Maps, charts, compass, navigation kit, waterproof map case
    • Head torch and spare batteries
    • Communication: each group of paddlers should carry several different ways of communicating with the emergency services and attracting attention, such as VHF radio, phone, PLB, flares, strobes

Water - in addition to what you might drink while paddling, you will need to carry enough for two days drinking and cooking. Depending on what you plan to cook, five litres should be sufficient, in multiple bottles, bladders, or in a food grade 5l plastic container. Make sure it is not going to leak on your kit!

Wild camping kit - see the image below for suggestions (ignore the ticks against items). Note that there may be some overlap with some of the above - no need to duplicate

The intention is to cement WW basic skills at Jackfield (Severn), before progressing to skills development at Mile End Mill (Dee), a 'run from the top' for those ready to defeat the Serpent, before a finale for those safe to do so with small groups on the Lower Tryweryn.

    Day 1 - 9 April - Jackfield

    Day 2 - 30 April - Jackfield

    Day 3 - 14 May - MEM all day

Day 4 - 28 May - MEM Run from Horseshoes to MEM

Club equipment is available to hire from the Club. We will make arrangements to open the containers in the week leading up to the event.

If none available, it will run as a peer paddle, with participants making decisions as to the suitability of themselves, their kit and the conditions for the planned trip. Time is meet time at Frankwell. Late arrivals may not get the opportunity to paddle.

Paddlers should be of intermediate or above standard (e.g. ability to self-rescue). The sessions will be based around a river journey, with relaxed, ad hoc coaching en route, as required or requested by paddlers.

Although trips may start at Frankwell, this  is subject to change and later updates may be provided to registered participants. For example, we may sometimes paddle at Montford Bridge, or from Montford Bridge to Frankwell. We will make an announcement if this is the case.

Two of these sessions are free before we ask you to sign up as a member. These sessions run through the summer every Monday.

Generally, participants in this session will have their own kit. However, if required, the club does have a small number of sea boats together with paddles, spray decks and buoyancy aids which can be provided by the Club for £7.50 charge, payable at booking. No refunds or transfers of booking payments are available for cancellations made on the day of the event.

Please bring non-cotton clothes for paddling in, footwear for paddling in (essential), water proof jacket and warm change of clothes.

Nick (Leader) and Grant (assistant) are running the final day of the Saunter Into Summer Series on Sat 18 June. Provided it is running, this will be held on the Lower Tryweryn. If not, then probably the Dee.

The Lower Tryweryn is a step up from the Dee, so this event will be strictly 6 Club Paddlers only.  We will NOT be running Bala Mill Falls (G4). If others wish to organise a Peer Paddle on the same day then that shall be entirely separate.

There is a great amount of information about the Lower T on the White Water Centre website. Note that you will need to sign up for a pass for the T when the dam release is announced, usually the Wed or Thus before hand.

The Saunter into Summer Series has been very popular, with many more than 6 people advancing their paddling skills over the sessions. As such Nick and Grant will run one trip down the Lower T in the morning, and another in the afternoon. THIS TRIP IS THE MORNING SESSION.

To join this trip, paddlers must have had a couple of sessions at Mile End Mill and preferably run Chainbridge and Serpents Tail on the Dee. If you have not run these please give Nick or Grant a call to discuss before signing up - its likely we will still invite you along provided we have paddled with you. There is an opportunity to run Serpents on the 4th June if you can make it, or we will do so one Wed evening.

    Camping

We are intending to camp the Fri night before at the camp site next door, Ty Cornel campsite. Currently there are places for the Fri night, but it is popular and will get booked up. Please reference Shrewsbury Canoe Club on your booking if you stay.

    Arrangements

Meet at the cafe at 9am having completed setting up the shuttle. When we know who is coming Nick and Grant will email out the shuttle instructions. So plan to be in Bala by 8.30.

It is c.2 to 3 hours down to Bala from the WW Centre, so we will be on the water at 10am sharp.

    Kit List

    Suitable boat with airbags

    Paddle

    BA

    Helmet

    Deck

Wetsuit or dry suit (T is dam release and it is ALWAYS f*cking cold...)

It promises to be a great day.

As always, any questions please get in touch with Nick or Grant
