Shrewsbury Canoe Club

COME AND JOIN US ON THE WATER

There is club activity on the water most weekend, and on Monday and Wednesday evenings during the summer

Summer Evening Sessions

Autumn & Winter Pool Sessions

Racing Sessions

WEEKEND PADDLES AND OTHER TRIPS

Most weekends there will be Members paddling somewhere, on the sea or surf or on white water or inland touring rivers.  Weekends away are likely to include the Dart, Pembrokeshire and the Tyne.

Longer trips each year may include Scotland, Ireland and the Greek islands for wild camping/sea kayaking, the Alps for white water.

Please join us as a member to take advantage of these trips. All trips are advertised through our website and shared by email when you become a member.

CLUB TRIPS/ACTIVITIES and PEER TRIPS/ACTIVITIES

Club trips/activities are offered by, or on behalf of, the committee. They will offer coaching and/or leadership by a club approved coach or paddle leader working within his or her approved remit.

Peer trips/activities are offered by members and are informal, with each individual responsible for themselves or their younger paddlers. The Club is not responsible for Peer activities.

PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE

Club members have public liability insurance whilst taking part in Club Trips/Activities.  Your household insurance may give public liability cover on Peer Trips/Activities.

If you do not have relevant cover under a household policy, probably the cheapest way to get this is to join British Canoeing as an “On the water member” as well as being a member of the Club

DUTY OF CARE AND ASSUMED RISK

On Club Activities Members and prospective members will be owed a duty of care by the Coach/Leader which will include advice and assistance with choice of kit if requested.  But paddle sport is always an assumed risk activity and the older/more experienced you are the more you must take responsibility for your own safety.

    09:30 - 11:15hrs 4 cumcs

    11:15 - 12:15hrs 6 cumcs

    13:30 - 16:15hrs 8 cumcs

The 4 cumcs is suitable for anyone with little WW experience. The 6 cumcs is a bit more than a grade 2. But if you come down in my group happy to give it a go. But your first swim ends the session!

On a 8 it's a pushy grade 3. I would not allow novice WW paddlers on.

I'm happy to lead groups down. With some coaching. But the rescue side of things is provided by CIWW not me. I of course will help out with any issues.

Cost. They split the day into two sessions. 4 & 6 session and 8 session. It's £10 per session. You'll have to pay for this, on line, prior to session. Use this link, link also has a safety video, they are wanting all to watch.

    https://www.ciww.com/park-and-play-2/

For those wanting to do the 4 cumcs session. It starts at 09:30. There is paperwork FAFF at the beginning, so I'd be there for 8:45. To do FAFF and get ready for pumps on at 09:30.S'bury to Cardiff is a tad under 3 hrs.

Anyone swimming in the course. The centre provides couple of people that throws lines at you. Boat and paddle go down to bottom of course. At bottom of course is a huge pool, here we reunite padders with their boats and paddles. In the pool is a conveyor belt that takes you to top of course. So there is admin FAFF at start of day, but then that's it. If the better paddlers wish to come down for the 8 cumcs release, I understand. But if some wish to help me, that would be great. If you're coming to help, no throw lines, but slings come in useful in bottom pool.

If you want to chat about it give me a ring. My son is coming along. So I'll have two boats on my roof rack, I can carry two more. Can get boats from containers prior to. But you'll probably need to sort getting them to Cardiff and back.
