COME AND JOIN US ON THE WATER

There is club activity on the water most weekend, and on Monday and Wednesday evenings during the summer

Summer Evening Sessions

Autumn & Winter Pool Sessions

Racing Sessions

WEEKEND PADDLES AND OTHER TRIPS

Most weekends there will be Members paddling somewhere, on the sea or surf or on white water or inland touring rivers.  Weekends away are likely to include the Dart, Pembrokeshire and the Tyne.

Longer trips each year may include Scotland, Ireland and the Greek islands for wild camping/sea kayaking, the Alps for white water.

Please join us as a member to take advantage of these trips. All trips are advertised through our website and shared by email when you become a member.

CLUB TRIPS/ACTIVITIES and PEER TRIPS/ACTIVITIES

Club trips/activities are offered by, or on behalf of, the committee. They will offer coaching and/or leadership by a club approved coach or paddle leader working within his or her approved remit.

Peer trips/activities are offered by members and are informal, with each individual responsible for themselves or their younger paddlers. The Club is not responsible for Peer activities.

PUBLIC LIABILITY INSURANCE

Club members have public liability insurance whilst taking part in Club Trips/Activities.  Your household insurance may give public liability cover on Peer Trips/Activities.

If you do not have relevant cover under a household policy, probably the cheapest way to get this is to join British Canoeing as an “On the water member” as well as being a member of the Club

DUTY OF CARE AND ASSUMED RISK

On Club Activities Members and prospective members will be owed a duty of care by the Coach/Leader which will include advice and assistance with choice of kit if requested.  But paddle sport is always an assumed risk activity and the older/more experienced you are the more you must take responsibility for your own safety.

POOL SESSION AT THE QUARRY POOL

Winter 2023/24 pool sessions - come and book onto a series of pool sessions to hone and refine your paddle skills in a safe, warm environment. Master your paddle technique, your bracing, or get that roll completely solid.

Club coaches will be on hand to support and assist. These sessions are especially good for paddlers starting out on their paddling careers, or for those wishing to master a specific skill set. They are less suited to experienced paddlers (you may be interested in the polo sessions instead when they start...).

Pool sessions are in blocks of 4 and for one hour slots. Please arrive at the pool at least 15 minutes early to get ready.

We have boats at the pool for use. The session is not suitable for SUPs. You can bring your own boat but it must be spotless clean inside and out, and will be inspected by a coach prior to put in. If not clean enough we will need to ask you to use a club boat.

A maximum of 2 sea boats can be used on the pool, and only on the 8pm session. You would need to bring your own. Please contact Grant on secretary@shrewsburycanoeclub.org if you intend on using a Sea Boat to check there is space to do so.

Please bring swim wear, and we strongly recommend goggles and nose clips.

The price for the four week block is £40 - this is non-refundable unless the Club needs to cancel a session for any reason. If you can't make a session then you are welcome to make this known through the Facebook site where often other members will take you up on the offer. You'll need to make payment arrangements with the other party directly in this circumstance independently.

If for any reason you can't make a block having booked it, please let us know and we will try and sell the block to another member - if successful we will refund your booking.

    Any queries please contact secretary@shrewsburycanoeclub.org

Grant is running a leisurely trip down the Dee from Log Cabins in Glyndyfrdwy to Mile End Mill, via (but not over) Horseshoe Weir. This is a grade 1/2 section, with a small section of G3.

If you wish, the trip can finish at Horseshoe Weir.

We will then continue on down to Mile End Mill for those who wish, taking in Serpent's Tail (portageable if preferred). This is a G2/3 section of the trip.

This is a split Club and Peer Paddle - the Club Paddle has a max of 5 paddlers, but please put yourself on the waiting list if it fills up as other Leaders may be able to join me, and I'll let you know.

The meet will be at 10.00 at Mile End Mill where we will sort the shuttle, dropping cars at the weir for those getting off there. Remember to register your car with MEM when you arrive, and to pay access if you intend coming on down to MEM.

We will aim to get on at Cabins at 10.45, roughly 2 hours (10km) down to the weir. Picnic on the bank, and then on down to MEM for mid-afternoon.

Kit wise - boat with air bags, paddle, deck, BA and helmet. Lunch, drink, and any safety equipment you may have and know how to use. Clothing suitable for paddling on cold water in Autumn. Wet suit with rain coat a minimum, preferably a dry suit. If you need club kit please call Grant on 07837 963160 well in advance to arrange collection. You will need to arrange transport of your kit to and from the river.

Any questions please give Grant a shout on 07837 963160.

    Happy paddling!

It’s about time we got back to CIWW for a play!

Grant McKelvie and Claire Quigley are paddling at CIWW on SUNDAY 15 October, making the trip open to anyone who has paddled Jackfield and MEM successfully and confidently.

Sundays at CIWW start on 4cu, raising to 6cu, then in the afternoon pumping at 8cu. So you can warm up to the bigger stuff. There is plenty of YouTube vids online to see what we are on about! The highlight being an escalator to get you back to the top of the course without getting out of your kayak.

CIWW run their own safety arrangements, so Claire and I will offer ‘light leading’ in the morning session, supporting paddlers descending the course. In the afternoon it will be a PEER PADDLE as we also want to play! But anyone confident will be able to carry on a peer paddle with us, all welcome.

You will need to book onto the morning and/or the afternoon directly with CIWW. There is a discount if you are planning to paddle both sessions.

    https://www.ciww.com/park-and-play-2/

Meet time will be 9.15 to walk the course and get kitted up. Usually we can get on the bottom wave for a warm up about 9.45. An hour break at lunch time before the afternoon session finishing about 4.

If you need any kit, or are wondering if this is for you, please give me a shout on 07837 963160.

M&M trip (Matt & Marc) are running a camping weekend trip to the south of Wales looking to paddle grade 3 rivers around the Brecon Beacons area in October (This could be changed to September)

I'm currently scouting rivers in South Wales in preparation for my summer coaching season. I will hopefully have a good understanding of the area by September/October.

I plan to find a campsite central to the Tawe/Usk/Taff/Afan which will be our base and give best potential for grade 3 paddling if there is water without travelling too far.

Paddlers best suited to this trip would be anyone comfortable paddling on Grade 2 (3) in kayak as a minimum, with some experience paddling on continuous Grade 3. Or anyone who will have been on most Intro to WW sessions at Jackfield/Llangollen throughout the summer. Some LowerTryweryn trips would be a good gauge to what might be expected in the Beacons.

Definite plans will be finalised mid summer with regards to campsite, dates and location.

Who want to join us paddling somewhere different? If your unsure if this trip is for you, get in touch, you will find me at most club sessions over the summer.

    • It’s back again for 2023.  So far one club leader has volunteered to  come so there will be a club trip element as well as peer trip.  Any other club leaders planning to come should please contact daveb.
    • All those who wish to come  should register on the  club site in the usual way. and must also book their place on the Tour and pay the Tour fee  via the tour website which is TyneTour.co.uk
    • As usual the tour includes the opportunity to camp on Tyne Green in Hexham right beside the river and that is where I shall be staying.
    • Exactly what we paddle will depend on river levels, the size and ability of our group(s) and on which of the club coaches/leaders come.
    • I shall set off from Shropshire early enough on Friday morning to get a paddle in on the way to the Tyne.  This is likely to be a section of the Lune, Kent or Eden. Saturday will be spent paddling part or all of the north Tyne from Bellingham down to Hexham with the evening taken up by the bonfire and fireworks display in Hexham and the Tour Ceilidh on Tyne Green for those who want them.
    • Sunday will be spent on a river in the Eden/ eastern lakes/Lune area and the drive home.
    • You must be competent at grade 2(3)  on the Friday and Sunday (or possibly grade 4 for those who are up to it). Expect grade 2 on the Saturday (and short sections of grade 3(4) if warden gorge is paddled.)
    • No juniors on the peer trips unless a parent is on the water with them.
    • If you are not prepared to camp in early November it is up to you to organise your own bunkhouse or youth hostel accommodation near to Hexham and to be at Tyne Green for 0900 on the Saturday  and the Sunday!
    • Kit list: full camping gear, boat paddle airbags deck helmet, full winter paddling costume and footwear, spare clothes.
    • In addition, if you have them: throwline, rescue sling, first aid, group shelter, split paddles.

M&M trip (Matt & Marc) will be running a whitewater trip up to the Lake District in November. Accommodation to be decided, once I have an idea of numbers I will see whether Kendal hostel is available.
The exact plan will depend on the group and water levels, but we'll be aiming to paddle mostly grade 3 with the odd grade 4 rapid. Expect us to be running rivers like the Greta, Duddon, Leven and Kent.
This trip will best suit paddlers who have a moderate amount of experience on grade 3, perhaps looking to push themselves a little bit beyond; ideally, you will be very comfortable on the lower Tryweryn, and have at least a few successful runs of the upper Tryweryn behind you.
If in doubt, get in touch, either by email or find me at MEM on a Wednesday evening.

Looking for a hands up / Expression of interest for a Spring Weekend Sea Kayaking in Pembrokeshire.

I'm looking to organise a long weekend sea kayaking in Pembrokeshire.  I've chosen these time of year as the puffins should be on Skomer.

This will be split into two parts.  If you want to attend both the intermediate and the advance please sign up for both.

Friday and Saturday will be intermediate with trips being focused on an out and back journey or a point to point along the coast line.  Location will depend on weather, conditions and what the group would like to get out of the two days.  Depending on the aims of the group we can look at rescues, self rescues, tows, kit, or scenarios.  Equally we can chill and enjoy the wildlife - it will be down to you to let me know what you would like out of the weekend, BUT it will be weather dependant.

Sunday and Monday will be an advanced trip!  Again location will depend on conditions and weather.  I am personally hoping for Skomer and/or Ramsey, but this (as anything on the sea) is not guaranteed.  The pre requisites to join this trip are the ability to roll (I don't mean in a pool - I mean in the sea in waves and moving/tidal water - if not first time then holding on and going for a second or third attempt), or sea 4* or sea leader. Talk to me if you are unsure about the pre requisites.

Those with good  WW experience (4*/WWL / solid roll/ comfortable on big ferry glides in waves) you may be interested in these trips, we can get you rolling a sea kayak (we can get you doing this on the first two days)  Booking on two both part of this trip would be essential.

I am looking to bring in an Advance coach/Leader for this trip so there will be a cost for this trip.  I am guessing it will be in the region of c£40 per day.  If we can fill the trip this may be able to be reduce slightly, but at c£40 per day it is still a bargain compared to other commercial options.  If we can't fill the trip we may open it up to club guests who meet the pre requisites, so you may be able to invite your friends.  We can then recruit and increase the number of club members.

I will suggest a campsite closer to the time which will be based on likely location of paddling.  You will need to book this directly.  You are very welcome to sort your own accommodation if you prefer something other than camping, but will need to get yourself to the start points each day.  We will need to run shuttles between us on the day.

For those not taking part in the Advanced days the Puffins should be on Skomer.  A boat trip to Skomer would be the perfect time.  You will need to book early to get a place Skomer Island | The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (welshwildlife.org)

I'm organising a long weekend sea kayaking in Pembrokeshire.  I've chosen these time of year as the puffins should be on Skomer.

I am looking to bring in an Advance coach/Leader for this trip so there will be a cost for this trip.  Having had some quotes this is coming in at £55 per day.   So looking at £110 for the two days.  This is half the price of a commercial trip rate. It will mean that at some points you will be lead by a qualified club leader and some points the qualified external leader.

Friday and Saturday will be trips for intermediate and beginners (groups may be split) with trips being focused on an out and back journey or a point to point along the coast line.  Location will depend on weather, conditions and what the group would like to get out of the two days.

Depending on the aims of the groups we can look at tidal planning, rescues, self rescues, tows, kit, or scenarios.  Equally we can chill and enjoy the wildlife - it will be down to you to let me know what you would like out of the weekend, BUT it will be weather dependant.  I'd like to know what you would like to get out of the weekend and a bit about your experience. To do my best to split the groups and focus on what skills you'd like to work on once you've signed up please complete the following very short survey  https://forms.gle/SfbA8uZSmvt5qReq9

Sunday and Monday will be an advanced trip!  This will be offered first to the club leaders as a way for them to progress their personal skills and leadership to enable the club to offer more trips.

However if there is enough interest we may be able to add extra intermediate trips on Sunday and Monday.  I would need 6 people to make this viable, let me know if you are interested.  It would be the same price £110 for the two days.

If we can't fill the trip I will open it up to club guests who meet the pre requisites, so you may be able to invite your friends.  We can then recruit and increase the number of Sea paddling club members.

I will suggest a campsite closer to the time which will be based on likely location of paddling.  You will need to book this directly.  You are very welcome to sort your own accommodation if you prefer something other than camping, but will need to get yourself to the start points each day.  We will need to run shuttles between us on the day.

Payment is be expected at time of booking, this will be non returnable, but you have the right to sell your spot to another member.

For those looking for extra activities in the area or have non paddlers with them, the Puffins should be on Skomer.  A boat trip to Skomer would be the perfect time.  You will need to book early to get a place Skomer Island | The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (welshwildlife.org)

Alex Ziegler is facilitating a Peer Paddling trip to The Small Isles

The Small Isles are a group of islands west of Arisaig. Rich in marine life and with a dramatic coastline of cliffs, sea caves and secluded bays. Exploring them will be the objective on this trip - paddling the open crossings between islands and exploring the wonderful variety of coastline.

This will be a six day trip, wild camping.

This is a Peer trip not a club led trip. Paddlers should be confident of paddling at intermediate plus/moderate waters.
