It'll be for two or three (ish) hours aiming to be on the water for 14.00.

White Water Trip
Coach/Leader: Grant McKelvie & Steve Thomas
Grant & Steve are leading a Club Trip on G2/3 water on the Lower Treweryn in Bala on Sun 23 June. This trip is a step up from Jackfield and Mile End Mill / Serpents Tail, on the most fabulous stretch of N Wales water. If you are unsure if this trip is for you, please give me a shout.
It is Dam Release, so will only go ahead if a release is confirmed, usually in the week prior. Likely relocate to Dee if not. Likely we will meet at 09:00 for Breakfast at Manon's Cafe at the WW centre, but paddle meet will be 10.00 at the WW Centre.
For more experienced paddlers there should be an opportunity to PEER PADDLE on the Upper Treweryn in the afternoon after finishing the Lower. Or Peer Paddlers can just play on the Upper and some of us will join you in the afternoon. Don’t book onto the event in this case - just let me know.
All paddlers will need to BOOK INTO the white water centre here:
TREWERYN BOOKING
Paddlers should be happy paddling in a straight(ish) line, getting into and out of eddies, and comfortable with a wet exit.
10 Club Paddle led places. More led places may be available if additional leaders can make it - put yourself on the waiting list if the event is full so we can gauge demand.
Required kit of WW boat, air bags, paddle, spray deck, helmet and buoyancy aid. Club kit available to hire, payable at booking. The boat booking must also be made here:
Attendees must arrange own transport of boat to location, which can be collected on a Monday evening at Frankwell, and returned prior to the next Mon evening. Or give Grant a call on 07837 963160 to arrange alternative boat pick up.
Please bring non-cotton clothes for paddling in, footwear for paddling in (essential), water proof jacket and warm change of clothes. Lunch and snacks also.
ROUNDABOUT ANGLESEY
Circumnavigation if the weather permits.
OPTION 1 : Circumnavigation of Anglesey expedition including nights wild camping or on a camp site.
OPTION 2 : Shorter sections of Anglesey as determined by conditions
Club members only. All participants will need to have paddled with me BEFORE the expedition.
Paddlers must be capable of 20 miles in a loaded boat in conditions of up to 1 metre swell and winds of Force 4.
Participants will need to nominate a person to contact if they are unable to complete the circumnavigation and need to return home.
We also need an offer of land support.
The dates of the 2024 Dewerstone Euros have been released - 7 and 8 September 2024! Whoop! A couple of us went last year, and it was a lot of fun! So getting this out there early to give everyone a chance to come along!
Nick and Grant will be organising SCC attendance at the event, but note it is a PEER trip as it is organised by British Canoeing Freestyle, and they will be covering safety etc.
Whats it all about then? Held at HPP artificial course in Nottingham, on the Saturday there is both a pro and novice freestyle event. Anyone can enter the novice - even I did last year, and I’m really bad at it! - points for surfing, capsizing, rolling, air guitar, honking donkey, etc. All a bit of mad fun.
Then on Sunday there is a kayak cross event (race down the course as quick as you can), big balls race (work as a team to get a big inflatable ball down the course) and the main event - the inflatables race! Get an inflatable, and race down the course. Bonkers.
camping is available at Holme Pier Point Country Park, just next to the event site. You will need to book early.
When the organisers release the event tickets, you will need to book and pay for your entry. Last year it was £50 for both days of events. There are free goodies and t shirts etc as well within the price. And you will need to book and pay for your own accommodation.
We will organise a couple of day trips to HPP once it warms up for those who fancy this, just to get our eye in. These will be separate events to be set up.
There are two event registrations - the YES, definitely coming. And the ‘DECIDE LATER’, if you need a little time to make up your mind. But it means we can keep you informed about it while you decide to come!
Last year it was such a laugh; so something I really recommend. Oh, and you’ll be rubbing shoulders (and probably your inflatable) with some of the worlds best freestyle kayakers - watching these paddlers compete is awesome.
Any questions feel free to give me (Grant, 07837 963160) or Nick a shout.
M&M are really excited to be running a white water CLUB TRIP for a week up in Scotland between the 26th Oct to 3nd Nov 2024 (Shropshire half term), with options to come up for a shorter time if you prefer.
What will we be doing?
We will be paddling some of the best rivers in Britain, including the Gary, Etive, Spean, Roy and hopefully many others (water levels depending) over the course of the week.
It is our intention to run this as a Club Trip to encourage as many paddlers as possible to come along. Between the Monday and Friday we will put on at least 3 Club Paddles led by qualified Leaders on Grade 2/3 rivers. We also plan to get a bit of hill walking in as well, perhaps up Ben Nevis if the weather allows for it.
We will also be facilitating Peer Trips around these Club Trips on slightly higher graded rivers that put our Leaders outside of BC qualifications but not experience for running them safely. Paddlers will be welcome to join these Peer Trips as well, either in full or to portage the trickier bits.
The exact rivers and plans for each day will be determined once we have an idea of water levels, the aspirations of the attending paddlers, etc.
We expect the Sunday and the following Saturday to be Peer Trips.
Be prepared that to get the most out of the week we may need to do a bit of travelling around the highlands when up there, despite our central location. We will seek to car share and make the shuttles as efficient as possible.
Where will we stay?
We will be staying at Aire Cruinnichadh, a lovely bunkhouse 15 miles outside Fort William in the Spean Valley.
https://highland-hostel.co.uk/
We have secured an initial 16 beds at the hostel at a cost of £25 pppn. The bunk house will sleep 28. Any bulk booking has to be confirmed by the end of March. The options for the week are;
1. Nights of Sat 26 October to Sat 2 November inclusive (8 nights)
2. Nights of Sun 27 October to Sat 2 November inclusive (7 nights)
3. Nights of Sun 27 October to Fri 1 November inclusive (6 nights)
4. Nights of Mon 28 October to Thus 31 October inclusive (4 nights)
5. Booking own accommodation at same bunkhouse or elsewhere
Booking and full payment prior to 31 March means a priority booking at the bunk house, and the Club will settle the accommodation bill. If you choose to come after 31 March, then only booking option available will be own accommodation, which you can either book directly at the bunkhouse if they still have space or elsewhere locally.
The bunk house costs are non-refundable after booking unless you or the Club can sell on your place.
The accommodation will be self catering, and we will sort such logistics out further nearer the time. Also some pubs and hotels locally to eat out.
Is this trip suitable for me?
This trip is suitable for all paddlers who have spent the summer on the river with us on a few WW club nights, and ideally a successful run or two down the Tryweryn / Serpents Tail, etc. We will do our best to put on trips in Wales to build confidence for this Club Trip over summer.
Paddlers under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian staying at the bunk house with them and available locally.
If in any doubt, please get in touch with Marc or Matt to get some advice.
What do I need to bring?
You will need to bring;
- personal paddling kit suitable for a Scottish October. Ideally a dry suit or good quality wet suit
- white water boat with airbags
- paddle, deck and helmet
- any safety and rescue equipment you have
- the usual snacks and drinks to bring on each river trip
Anything else?
Be prepared to come along, and have a great time with us! Any questions please give us a shout.
