I'm planning a session at Simpsons Pool to practice deep water rescues. Simpsons Pool/Pond/Lake (you decide) is clean, it doesn't recieve any sewage overflow, and so is a perfect venue for us to swim next to our boats!
I thought we could practice or learn for the first time self and peer rescue and anything new people would like to try.
I'm putting this out to all craft (including raft)
It's a great venue to get wet next to your car pretty close to home and practice most aspects of you paddling without having to worry about the long journey home or getting ill from sewage.
The venue is recently available to us and I will likely put some more of these on across the rest of winter. Arthog have overall responcibility for the site and are allowing us access, we have agreed a cost of £4 per paddler for a session and that money will go straight to Arthog from the club for the benifit of the children they work with.
Parking is limited so car sharing would be ideal, I'll keep the session open to 10 applicants, but the venue won't take ten cars...
As great as the venue is the water is colder than the river and than the sea, so approprait clothing is important. Thick wet suit or a dry suit I would say. I will buy myself an extra thick rubber swimming hat after posting this.
The location is here on google maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/5gmqXSAmJX2EHwQQA
and what three words is cherry.hairstyle.canines
I'll be at the gate letting people in at the 10am
Winter Polo Has started but its not too late to join in!
Polo is a well practiced way to improve all aspects of your paddling; balance, paddle control, turns and support strokes! Best of all it's team based fun with lots of camaraderie.
This session is specifically for beginners as well as returners – Please book on if you want to try something new & get wet (in the slightly warmer and cleaner pool)!
All paddling and polo specific kit available at the pool. Just bring your enthusiasm, swimming kit, plus a short sleeve top and wet shoes.
Arrive 7.30pm for a short briefing to be on the water between 8 and 9pm, cost is £9 PP! (£10 for guests).
See below for further information & feel free to ask any questions via polo@shrewsburycanoeclub.org

POOL SESSION AT THE QUARRY POOL
We have a couple of spare spaces for 1 session/week only
Winter 2024 pool sessions - come and book onto a pool sessions to hone and refine your paddle skills in a safe, warm environment. Master your paddle technique, your bracing, or get that roll completely solid.
Club coaches will be on hand to support and assist. These sessions are especially good for paddlers starting out on their paddling careers, or for those wishing to master a specific skill set. They are less suited to experienced paddlers (you may be interested in the polo sessions instead when they start...).
Pool sessions are one hour slots. Please arrive at the pool at least 15 minutes early to get ready.
We have boats at the pool for use. The session is not suitable for SUPs. You can bring your own boat but it must be spotless clean inside and out, and will be inspected by a coach prior to put in. If not clean enough we will need to ask you to use a club boat.
A maximum of 1 sea boat can be used on the pool, and only on the 8pm session. You would need to bring your own. Please contact secretary@shrewsburycanoeclub.org if you intend on using a Sea Boat to check there is space to do so.
Please bring swim wear, and we strongly recommend goggles and nose clips.
This is non-refundable unless the Club needs to cancel a session for any reason. If you can't make a session then you are welcome to make this known through the Facebook site where often other members will take you up on the offer. You'll need to make payment arrangements with the other party directly in this circumstance independently.
Any queries please contact secretary@shrewsburycanoeclub.org
What? - River Dart Winter 2024 Club Trip is combining with Gene17's Adventure Paddlers Weekend
When? - November 29 to December 1 2024
Where? – River Dart Country Park (RDCP)
Claire Quigley, Tom Hyde and Grant McKelvie (and hopefully a couple of other leaders) are heading to the epic River Dart for a weekend of great paddling, linking in with the Gene17 Adventure Paddling weekend at the River Dart Country Park.
What’s the plan?
A few of us will be heading down on Friday morning early to get a PEER PADDLE on the Grade 4 Upper Dart, and to avoid the weekend traffic. The on Sat we will most likely run one or two laps of the Dart Loop and/or Lower Dart which is a G2/3 river by the Country Park, and we’ll see what’s running and what everyone fancies on Sunday morning before setting course to home.
This trip is suitable for anyone who has paddled a bit on moving water, ideally a couple of sessions at the Dee over the summer with us. But if in any doubt if this is for you please give us a shout on 07837 963160.
Accommodation
We have secured 2x 6 bed bunk rooms at the Country Park, which are £25 per person per night including linen. There is also the option to camp at the Country Park for £30 per night per pitch. Both of these include your entrance fee to the park which is usually £12 for the weekend.
To book one of the beds please email info@riverdart.co.uk quoting Shrewsbury Canoe Club. They will reserve your bed, and send you a link to pay. Payment must be made no later than 1 week in advance. If all 12 beds get booked then they currently have additional availability and can increase our booking. We don’t need to fill all 12 beds.
To camp, please just book your pitch at riverdart.co.uk to suit your requirements.
After booking to secure your place, we suggest you don’t make payment until the week prior - the Dart can be a bit temperamental with river levels, and there is no penalty for cancelling a min 7 days prior. We should have a good idea by then.
You can self cater, but most of us will be doing breakfast and evening meal at the onsite cafe The Old Saw Mill which was excellent last year. This is not included in the accommodation fee.
Kit and Boats
As always, kit and boats are available to hire from the Club for the weekend. Please book out on our website, and give me a shout on 07837 963160 to sort collection from our containers. You will be responsible for getting your boat and too and from the Dart.
Needed; Boat with air bags, paddle, deck, helmet, BA, suitable winter paddling attire, sense of humour.
Details from Facebook Gene17’s Adventure Paddlers Weekend Page
The Adventure Paddlers Weekend, a meeting point for all kayakers near the end of the year celebrates Adventure Paddling! Although not far away, we would like to make this a weekend trip to pick up the social side - if there is interest we will look at sorting a bunk house or similar for the weekend. Juniors also welcome, but will need to be accompanied over the weekend by a parent or guardian, even if not on the river with us.
Join us for the last Shrewsbury Canoe Club time trial of the year. Santa hats expected.
Open to all paddlers and boats (white water, sea kayak, open canoe, racing, SUP, polo etc) with a choice of 2.5km and 5km courses. We'll orgainse a rough handicap, setting the slowest boats off first with the aim of everyone finishing close together. Arrive at 0900 for first boats off at 0930. Should be off the water by 1030 so that everyone is back home in plenty of time for Sunday lunch.
This will be a peer paddle as you will need to be able to self rescue if no one is close enough to help out.
You'll need a boat, paddle, bouyancy aid, suitable paddling clothing depending on the weather and a change of clothes for afterwards.
Free for club members with their own boats and paddling kit. £4 entry fee for non-members and/or boat hire.
Changing available in the cricket pavilion plus tea and mince pies afterwards.
Any questions please email racing@shrewsburycanoeclub.org

We are planning to organise another trip through the Dudley Tunnels and want to gauge interest from members. Actual dates will depend on booking availability and leaders.
Paddling in a round trip totalling about 9 miles with 2 short portages. Underground for about 4 miles through the Dudley limestone tunnels and the Netherton tunnel. We hope to be able to visit the main chamber at the Dudley tunnels site as well as the tunnel itself.
Good for all types of boat and for all paddlers (except claustrophobes!) able to go in a straight line and to paddle for about 9 miles with breaks but a minimum age of 10 y.o. for solo paddlers. Anyone from 10y.o. to 12y.o. paddling solo must be accompanied by a parent or other adult equipped and able to deliver a tow if necessary.
Everybody on this trip must be club members with up to date membership on the day of the paddle.
Cost is usually about £10 per head to cover access to the Dudley Tunnels plus club boat hire per boat if required.
Hi All,
I'm gauging interest for an introductory weekend of sea paddling. This would be different to previous sea kayak, trips this year, as I'm suggesting using a proffessional provider based on Holy Island called Sea Kayaking Wales (https://seakayakingwales.com/). The advantage being that Sea Kayaking Wales can offer equipment beyond what the club can such as a range of kayaks, paddles, dry suits, helmets, and BA's. They would also provide proffessional coaching. Cost wise we get a discount for being a club so it would be £180 for two days (kit and coaching). This would be aimed at those who haven't done much or any sea kayaking.
I would aim at two days on the water, dependant on the conditions that might be a lake in wales, or some scenic coastline. I think we would have club leaders present too for continuity for new sea paddlers into their next endevour.
A weekend of this nature is how I started a few years ago, it's very helpful for building context and confidence as sea kayaking can be difficult to start due to all the equipment requirements. There is some seriously fun and exciting stuff one can do in a sea kayak, but you have to start somewhere. White water skills do transfer but only after some extra learning/adjustment.
If we got the numbers we could arrange something at Anglesey Outdoors for accomodation.
So, click a ticket and register interest if you think a weekend like this could be of interest to you. I have put April but I haven't arranged anything yet with sea kayaking wales so that is flexible and registering interest isn't binding. I think it would be two days or no days though.
